Hi I’m Dorothy James, owner of New Beginnings Counseling and Consulting LLC.

I am a divorced mother of 4 and I am a US Army Veteran. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health with a Master of Science in Community Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wilmington University. I have certifications in integrative mental health, mood disorders, and trauma. I worked as an intern at a domestic violence and rape crisis shelter. I have worked with children, adolescents, and families as an IOP therapist, a behavioral health consultant, and a school-based counselor. Since then, I have been in private practice, working primarily with adolescents, adults, and couples. While my training has prepared me for my role as a mental health counselor, I also have lived experience as a mom raising a now-adult child with a diagnosis of ADHD and bipolar disorder (since age 8) as well as my own life experiences.

I take a person-centered approach with my clients. I believe in developing a therapeutic relationship that promotes positive change in one’s life by building on current strengths. I view counseling as a supportive, nonjudgmental, working relationship resulting in meaningful change for my clients. Feedback, education, and collaboration are essential components of this type of relationship. I am committed to providing the supportive environment needed to promote healing and continued growth. Counseling is tailored to address your specific needs. From domestic violence and mood disorders to anxiety and life stressors, I am here to help. I will work with you to develop a plan to address your specific counseling needs.
